definitions from summer school

At the slic summer school in Nottingham we asked students to fill in a luggage label with a comment which they felt best described landscape architecture.

The responses were varied (as always) but give some idea what those studying the subject feel and desire. If you’d like to add your own thoughts or discuss those already here add a comment at the bottom of the page.

“a landscape architect is someone who uses life experience, outside the box thinking and creative design to develop the structure and flow of spaces”

“landscape architects change the appearance of a landscape to benefit the people / creatures who use it”

“landscape architects should lead design teams from the front as project managers – bringing together disparate elements such as architecture, planning and engineering”

“I think we should be working as broadly as possible rather than giving ourselves specific titles”

“definition of a landscape architect – an artist trying his hand at gardening!”

“landscape architecture – it’s the future, I’ve seen it!!”

“landscape architecture is a combination of arts with environmental sciences producing better outdoor spaces at different scales for the enjoyment of the people”

“landscape architecture is the development of cultures, the bringing together of people through art and imagination. It really makes a difference to peoples lives”

“landscape architecture is the larger landscape – combining all aspects and bringing disciplines together. Planners, landscape designers, let us enjoy our common ground and work together to move forward and become a force to be reckoned with”

“landscape architecture means to design our environment using built form, planting and physical changes to be aesthetically pleasing and useful to society”

“landscape is for everybody, in the past, present and future. Let’s make our future better.”

“landscape architecture enables a dialogue between people and places for mutual benefit”

“landscape architecture is designing spatial experiences and the aesthetics of our outdoor surrounds”

“for me landscape architecture is the process of making me feel that I’ve made a positive physical difference to a place, and that makes me feel good!”

“landscape architecture is the opportunity to implement good creative design to change or improve the environment for the better”

“landscape architecture is more than the design of external aesthetics and the functionality of space, more than soft and hard materials, it is an art form and as such defies simple definition”
