I am 27 year old mature student studying Landscape Architecture at UCE in Birmingham.
My interest in landscape began through horticulture and progressed in to garden design which I studied for two years part time before starting up on my own as a garden designer. I soon discovered I missed learning, and began my degree in Landscape Architecture as a full time second year student. In my third year I have returned to studying part time, which suits me very well, allowing me the flexibility to manage work for other designers as well as my own projects.
At some point in the future I would like to set up my own practice, but at the moment the time spent working for different practices and designers gives me great experience of a wide variety of projects and work practices

Originally, I wanted to pursue a different profession in my late teens. However, following some detailed research, I became convinced that a career in landscape architecture can be very rewarding. Landscape is about the design, conservation and planning of space whether it be a town square, a park, residential courtyard, a woodland etc, for the benefit of people, and the environment. It can be as formal as a royal park; or dynamic, where rules can be “literally” broken to create spaces beyond imagination.
Having seen some good examples of landscape design in Europe, and the UK, I am convinced that there is a positive and rewarding future for the profession for decades to come. With global warming and the environment being major issues in todays world, there is no doubt that the profession can greatly assist in overcoming the problem, but at the same time without compromising well thought out spaces for people to enjoy.
I am hoping to become a responsive landscape architect with an emphasis on urban design, making good places for people and the environment.

Since I was about 12 I have always wanted to be a Landscape Architect. I can’t really remember why but knew that I thought I wouldn’t want to be stuck in an office all week but loved the countryside and wanted to work in it. When I was 16 I went and did a weeks work experience with a Landscape Architect which was excellent. During Sixth Form my main interests became Geology, Geography and Design Technology. Thus LA was the perfect choice as it combines all these subjects nicely. The design work from technology, the physical features of the land in Geology and then the Human issues in Geography.

Landscape Architecture at Kingston University
When I first heard about Landscape Architecture I realised that it encompassed all my interests (art, ecology and graphic design). I paid a visit to a Landscape Architect and soon became certain that it was the career I wished to pursue.
I am now in my third year of the course at Kingston University and have enjoyed working on various North Sea Faring projects which involved trips to Dundee, Colchester and Scandinavia. In the future I hope to work on projects that will enable me to influence and improve people’s experience with their environment but for now I’m enjoying learning everything I can about the subject and experiencing many new and exciting landscapes.
