Course description
This programme includes four taught years leading to an enhanced undergraduate degree at Master’s level, awarded on completion of the study period. It includes an important element of postgraduate and professional teaching in the final year, and offers very competitive qualifications in the professional marketplace. The first year is common to all our Planning and Landscape degree programmes, allowing you to switch between programmes for the second year onwards. It introduces environmental and urban planning and landscape studies, and aims to give a flavour of the sorts of problems and issues faced by professionals dealing with the planning and management of all aspects of our built and natural environments. You examine ecological, social, economic and historical aspects of the wider environment, and learn about gathering, analysing and presenting information. You also become familiar with using computers. The second year introduces the landscape specialism, and the third year concentrates on the urban environment and the management of urban green space. The final year focuses on professional studies in landscape planning, and can include one semester in a partner European department. The MLPM programme is fully recognised by the Landscape Institute, and soon also by the RTPI, as the first programme in the country to train landscape professionals in large-scale landscape planning. It is possible to take a placement year out after the second or third year of studies.
